Butterstream Gardens, Meath, Ireland

Butterstream Gardens

Co. Meath

There is a rose garden, a white garden, a wild garden, an herbaceous garden, a pool garden and many others, all containing wonderfully controlled masses of flower and leaf forms hidden away by neatly clipped hedges and leafy screens. The first area to be created was the Rose Garden - a long rectangular compartment with beech surround and box-hedging flanking beds each side of a central path. From here a path leads into a smaller adjacent compartment - the White Garden - another early feature of the layout. On the opposite side of the Rose Garden lies another even smaller compartment, the Red and Yellow Garden, also delimited by tall clipped beech hedges. This little area has been reserved for all the vibrant colours - the reds, scarlets, yellows and strident oranges that are rather difficult to mix in borders to good effect. The centre-piece of Butterstream is the large Herbaceous Garden. This has an oval island bed with a surrounding grass path and is planted magnificently - a rare sight in Ireland these days.

Trim and the Boyne Valley

Noel French , Mill Street, Co. Meath

Trim: Our walking tour takes in the Castle, the largest in Ireland, one of the medieval monasteries, the town walls and the remains of a medieval church thus giving a complete view of life in the Middle Ages. See where Braveheart was filmed... Kells: The High crosses, the round tower, the remains of an oratory and the Book of Kells illustrate the importance of Kells as an early monastic site. Tara: Legendary Tara, the home of the High Kings, illustrates the political and religious importance of the site in Celtic times. For School Tours worksheets are provided so bring a pencil. We have a loud speaker so we can cater for large groups although we prefer to split them.
