923. NavanNavan, the county town, is in pleasant undulating country at the meeting of the Boyne and Black-water Rivers, with a recently developed industry deriving from mineral deposits. Navan is now one of the major centres for furniture manufacture in the country. 924. NobberNobber, in the very north of the county, was the birthplace of Turlough O'Carolan, composer, poet and the most famous of all Irish harpists. While still a child he was blinded by smallpox. Thus he was freed from the labours of work in the fields and allowed to concentrate on developing his musical genius. His family moved to Roscommon where the McDermott Roe family came to recognise his special talents and Mrs. McDermott Roe became his patron for life, enabling him to fully complete his musical studies. His concerts were acclaimed and the music of 'The Star Spangled Banner' is attributed to O'Carolan. He died on the 25th March 1738. The river Dee provides fishing. 925. OldcastleThe village of Oldcastle is the 18th-century creation of the Napier family who had received parts of the Plunkett estate following the Cromwellian wars. St. Oliver Plunkett, a 17th-century Archbishop of Armagh who was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in 1681 on false charges, was the most famous scion of this family. Often styled 'the last of Ireland's martyrs', he was canonised by the Vatican in 1975. A welcome break from one's travels can be enjoyed in the neighburing tranquil forest park at Lough Sheelin and Lough Bracken, havens of peace and quiet affording worderful opportuities for walkng or picnics. 926. RatoathRatoath was one of the four borough towns founded by the Anglo-Normans within County Meath. The name is derived from Rath to 'Fort of To' which suggests there was a settlement here prior to the Normans. The village was retained by Hugh de Lacy as a seignorial manor. Close by is Fairyhouse Racecourse, one of the most famous racecourses in Ireland, where every Easter the Irish Grand National is run. 927. SkreenTo the south of the village is the Hill of Screen, site of an early Christian Monastery. The word “skreen” or “skyrne” is the equivalent of the English word “shrine”.
